ShopQueer.co is an online LGBTQ+ bookstore and e-commerce startup headquartered in Los Angeles. We split our profits with queer authors, and we’re getting ready to launch a traveling bookmobile to fight anti-LGBTQ+ book bans across the country. We’re looking for some fellow lovers of queer books to help make it all happen!

We are currently only considering candidates for our Web Developer position. For all other positions, we will keep applicants' resumes on file and be in touch as our team continues to grow.

Position: Operations Manager
Location: Los Angeles (In-Person)
Work schedule: Part-time, with potential to grow into full-time (20-40 hours/week)
Rate: $25 hourly


Primary Purpose

The Operations Manager will oversee inventory and fulfillment logistics at our Santa Monica headquarters. They will begin by learning the basics of our fulfillment process hands-on, then quickly transition to coordinating publisher orders and managing a team of Operations Assistants.

Main Duties and Tasks

1. Handle publisher relations, including the placing, receipt, and accurate logging of wholesale book orders

2. Oversee the fulfillment of orders at our Santa Monica headquarters, managing a team of Operations Assistants

3. Manage author onboarding and payouts, implementing and refining existing systems

4. Update online book listings and collections via Shopify and related platforms

5. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Capable leader with a friendly and effective management style

2. Strong logistical, analytical, and writing skills, with excellent attention to detail

3. Ability to accurately perform record-keeping functions and inventory control

4. Able to efficiently communicate with remote and onsite team members

5. Knowledge of or ability to learn relevant computer programs, including but not limited to Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, Shopify, and Airtable

6. Ability to receive and stock products at our fulfillment center, including lifting up to 20 lb

7. Previous bookstore and/or retail experience preferred but not required

Position: Operations Assistant

Primary Purpose

The Operations Assistant will work with the founders of ShopQueer.co to tackle inventory and fulfillment logistics at our Santa Monica headquarters. They will report to the Operations Manager.

Main Duties and Tasks

1. Pack, seal, label, or affix postage to prepare materials for shipping

2. Assist with shipments, orders, and invoices, verifying all for accuracy

3. Shelve, arrange, and track stock according to specific criteria

4. Update online book listings and collections via Shopify and related platforms

5. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Strong logistical and analytical skills, with excellent attention to detail

2. Ability to accurately perform record-keeping functions and inventory control

3. Ability to receive and stock products at our fulfillment center, including lifting up to 20 lb

4. Basic math, keyboard, and data-entry skills, including comfort with Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel

5. Previous bookstore and/or retail experience preferred but not required

Position: Web Developer
Location: Remote

Primary Purpose

Our Web Developer will refine our existing e-commerce systems and implement new tools to ensure that our technology meets the ongoing needs of all operational aspects of ShopQueer.co.

Main Duties and Tasks

1. Develop components for Shopify ecosystem by installing and modifying existing Shopify apps and interfaces or developing new Shopify apps and interfaces as needed

2. Propose, develop, and test enhancements in alignment with internal business process requirements

3. Build custom tools to meet specific criteria related to product inventory processing

4. Optimize UX by ensuring that customer-facing applications are configured for ease of use, including mobile responsiveness

5. Research and evaluate systems best practices to support point of sale, inventory management, business intelligence, and other areas to ensure maximum operational efficiency

6. Communicate impactful changes to staff, including maintaining clear and complete documentation of web procedures and processes

7. Interface with technical support for Shopify and other applications used by staff

8. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Solid understanding of Shopify and general eCommerce and consumer marketing technologies

2. Strong proficiency in modern design patterns and development languages, including JavaScript, Typescript, Python, HTML5, CSS3, and Ruby; experience with Liquid a plus

3. Comfort with Laravel web framework

4. Proficiency in responsive design principles

5. Knowledge of APIs, webhooks, and general data transfer approaches

6. Ability to identify areas that can be streamlined or automated

7. Capable of learning new technologies and platforms quickly and able to apply them to solve complex problems

8. Ability to multitask, problem solve, and execute tasks with accuracy in a fast-paced environment

Position: Rainbow Book Bus Operations Manager
Location: Remote
Work schedule: Part-time (up to 20 hours/week)

Primary Purpose

Our Rainbow Book Bus Operations Manager will work closely with ShopQueer.co’s founders as we bring the Rainbow Book Bus initiative to life! Coming on board after our initial round of fundraising, they will shape our transition from planning to action as we look to maximize the project’s impact.

Main Duties and Tasks

1. Execute next steps in bus renovation process, coordinating with leadership to select appropriate vendors and designers

2. Propose and revise initial travel route through small towns in the United States

3. Establish and maintain contacts at LGBTQ+ community centers across the country

4. Work with Marketing and Fundraising staff to craft publicity materials for further Rainbow Book Bus fundraising campaigns

5. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Ability to work collaboratively as well as build and maintain professional relationships

2. Excellent verbal and written communications skills: ability to communicate ShopQueer.co’s mission to potential funders, individual supporters, and other stakeholders

3. Project management skills: stays on top of multiple projects, anticipates obstacles, and identifies and meets deadlines through careful planning

4. Highly organized, motivated, and detail-oriented with a strong sense of ownership over goals

5. Maintains a high bar for quality even when things are hectic

6. Willingness to travel a plus but not required

Position: Rainbow Book Bus Fundraising Consultant
Location: Remote

Primary Purpose

Our Rainbow Book Bus Fundraising Consultant will work closely with ShopQueer.co’s founders as we bring the Rainbow Book Bus initiative to life! Coming on board after our initial round of fundraising, they will provide consultation in acquiring and managing corporate partnerships, individual donors, and business grants.

Main Duties and Tasks

1. Collaborate with ShopQueer.co’s founders on the development of the Rainbow Book Bus’ fundraising plan (from budget to construction to operation), which includes securing corporate partnerships; cultivating individual donors; and researching, drafting, and submitting proposals for nonprofit grants.

2. Work to identify funding opportunities available to start-ups and LGBTQ+ organizations, track deadlines, and execute compelling grant applications

3. Develop and maintain relationships with start-ups, LGBTQ+ partnerships, and independent financial supporters

4. Coordinate with Marketing and Fundraising staff in the creation of publicity materials for further Rainbow Book Bus fundraising campaigns

5. Establish a formal development database, including donor and prospect lists, donor communications, and acknowledgement thank-you letters and packages

6. Provide support to ShopQueer.co’s founders to make funding asks

Required Qualifications

1. A minimum of three (3) years of Private and Public Grant Writing experience

2. Commitment to helping LGBTQ+ communities in need and ShopQueer.co’s mission

3. Excellent writing and organizational skills (writing samples required)

Primary Purpose

The Operations Consultant will work closely with the founders and Operations Manager to refine and develop ShopQueer.co’s supply chain, Santa Monica warehouse, and fulfillment operations.

Main Duties and Tasks

1. Advise in optimizing existing warehouse and distribution operations, including inventory optimisation, full warehouse layout design, and warehouse process optimisation

2. Identify suboptimal warehouse design, inefficient operational processes, and under-performing technology to develop short and long-term mitigation strategies

3. Optimize the existing space in our warehouse to effectively process the growing numbers of sales orders

4. Improve picking accuracy to avoid customer service issues related to receiving incomplete or incorrect orders

5. Understand the potential synergies of ShopQueer.co and its upcoming Rainbow Book Bus

6. Determine the warehouse activity based costs for specific customers and products

7. Potentially locate a bigger and newer warehouse, if necessary

Required Qualifications

1. Minimum of 2 years of Warehouse Management experience

2. Minimum of 2 years of Consultant or IT support experience

3. Experience of working within a large database development project team

4. Capable of speaking articulately to a breadth of topics such as data store technologies, data warehousing, data virtualization, and data modeling

5. A strong understanding of warehousing design principles (physical and virtual)

Position: Data Consultant
Location: Remote

Primary Purpose

Our Data Consultant will analyze customer needs and behavior to improve ShopQueer.co’s efficiency, ROI, and customer retention rate, gathering data insights and applying them to optimize our business strategies.

Main Duties and Tasks

1. Establish, implement, and codify data-monitoring best practices, including but not limited to designing and implementing customer surveys, UTMs, dynamic customer tagging, and A/B testing recommendations

2. Provide data-grounded recommendations regarding marketing strategies 

3. Monitor and enhance data integrations between Shopify website and third-party systems (e.g., Mailchimp, social media ad platforms)

4. Produce monthly data reports analyzing web, email, and social media channels, including qualitative analysis of insights revealed by the data to guide future operational decisions

5. Monitor wider industry’s product pricing, policies, and marketing strategies; communicate information on successful strategies to appropriate staff members

6. Work with Marketing staff to ensure our brand strategies rely on up-to-date data insights

7. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Strong proficiency with Google Analytics, Data Studio, Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, and statistical modeling 

2. Familiarity with POS systems (e.g., Shopify), Mailchimp, and social media ads

3. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a logical approach

4. Ability and willingness to write detailed, high-quality documentation of complex processes

5. Ability to identify anomalies in the data, troubleshoot, and reconcile

6. Ability to effectively convey data concepts to non-technical staff
